Russian authorities on Tuesday shut down the server infrastructure of the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, the publication's editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov said. The move comes after Novaya Gazeta, which has been critical of the Kremlin, announced it was halting publication for the duration of Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.
Muratov, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, said the authorities had blocked the newspaper's website and all its social media accounts. He added that the publication's staff were working to restore access to its online resources.
According to Muratov, the authorities also seized the newspaper's bank accounts, making it impossible for Novaya Gazeta to pay salaries or bills.
The closure of Novaya Gazeta is the latest blow to press freedom in Russia, where the government has cracked down on independent media outlets critical of the Kremlin's actions in Ukraine.
In March, Russia passed a law that criminalized the spread of what the authorities deemed to be "fake" information about the country's military operation in Ukraine. Since then, several independent Russian news outlets have been forced to shut down or severely curtail their reporting.
Novaya Gazeta had been one of the few remaining independent newspapers in Russia. Throughout its 30-year history, the publication has been sharply critical of the Russian government and has faced numerous attacks, including the murders of several of its journalists.
Muratov, who co-founded Novaya Gazeta in 1993, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year for his efforts to safeguard freedom of expression in Russia.
The closure of Novaya Gazeta is a significant blow to press freedom in Russia and leaves the country with even fewer independent sources of information. It also raises concerns about the ability of Russian citizens to access reliable and unbiased news and information about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
